ABOUT US

A Hometown Practice, Built on Trust Since the 1940s

Our Story

Family Care of Chilhowie traces its roots back to the Greever Clinic, built in the late 1940s by brothers Dr. Bill Greever and Dr. Don Greever. Dr. Bill delivered babies both at the clinic and in patients’ homes, a hallmark of the personal, in-community care that defined the practice from its earliest days. Dr. Don practiced Internal Medicine and stayed by his patients’ sides through hospital admissions, setting a standard of continuity that the practice still holds today.
In 1991, Dr. Wayne Reynolds took over the practice, bringing his own expertise in internal medicine along with a deep commitment to the Chilhowie community — including his service as Operational Medical Director for Chilhowie Fire and EMS. In 1997, Gerard Murphy, M.D. joined the practice, drawn by a calling to rural family medicine and a desire to serve patients in an underserved area where high-quality healthcare is needed most. Dr. Murphy is board certified in Family Practice and has now provided care in Chilhowie for more than 25 years.
Today, Dr. Murphy leads Family Care of Chilhowie alongside Rebecca Nash, FNP and Jessica Reynolds, FNP, continuing a tradition that’s now spanned multiple generations of providers — and multiple generations of the same Chilhowie families.

Today

Dr. Murphy leads a team that includes Rebecca Nash, FNP, and Jessica Reynolds, FNP, continuing the practice's original mission under the name Family Care of Chilhowie.

Our Mission

We are passionate about caring for you and your family. From our adorable newborns to our beloved seniors and everyone in between, our goal is simple: build lasting relationships with every patient who walks through our door. As a privately owned practice, we answer to our patients, not a corporate parent — which means more time with you, more continuity in your care, and a team that actually knows your name.

Why Families Choose Us

Most of our patients don’t think of us as “a doctor’s office” — they think of us as their family’s doctor’s office, the way their parents and grandparents did before them. That continuity is the difference between a practice that knows your chart and one that knows your family history. As a privately owned clinic, we set our own priorities: more time per visit, more consistency in who you see, and a team that recognizes your voice on the phone.

Our Team

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Family Care of Chilhowie a private practice or part of a hospital system?
We are independently, privately owned — not part of a larger hospital network. That independence lets us make decisions based on what’s best for our patients rather than a corporate parent.
Our roots go back to the Greever Clinic, founded in the late 1940s. Today’s practice carries that legacy forward under Dr. Gerard Murphy’s leadership.
